Thank you, Uncle Sam
Last August while we were living in Boston, we realized that our license plate tags had expired the May before. We then had to jump through an insane number of hoops to get our registration renewed in Utah when the car was in Massachusetts, praying, all the while, that we didn't get a million dollar ticket in the meantime.
This year we've kept an eye on things and are aware that the tags expire this month. So we have already taken the car in for inspection and are sending in the paperwork tomorrow. We figured we might as well get some basic maintenance done while it was getting inspected, which included lube oil and filter, new windshield, and new drive and timing belts. Kind of painful to the pocketbook. BUT, thanks to good old Uncle Sam and his fabulous economic stimulus plan, we didn't feel it a bit. In fact, we had a little left over.
So with high spirits and a shiny new windshield I drove to my final knitting class that night. Almost to my knitting class, that is. On the way up the steepest hill in Utah, I realized that I had absolutely no power, shifted to 2nd, still had no power, went down to first and floored it while sucking my gut in in hopes that that would make the load lighter, and ended up stranded in the Little Cesar's parking lot. So I had a nice brisk walk home. It wouldn't have been such a big deal except we had to be in Roy (kind of far away) for a home inspection (more to come...) the next morning.
So Nate jogged over and somehow got the car back to the shop and the nice man fixed it up again free of charge the next morning. I then sweated my face off as I hauled a carseat full of Addison to the car place, and we were on our way to Roy.
We got within about fifteen minutes of our destination and hit an unidentified but HUGE object compliments of the construction going on. So as Addison screamed in the car, Nate did his manly duty and changed the back right tire in his suit and tie in the ferocious wind.
To make a long story short, we made it to and from the inspection with 3 regular tires and one the size of a doughnut and Addison and I stopped by the tire store on the way home to get a new one and finish off the rest of our gift from the government.
Even though it is insanely exasperating that all that wonderful "free" money came and went in like 3 days' time and all for the blasted car, we feel pretty lucky that it came when it did. Must be that check we wrote last Sunday...
