The House

So, for the last several months, we've been religiously checking all the real estate sites, and last month we hired an agent and started actually looking at houses!! It's been a time-consuming, heart-wrenching, sleep loss-inducing, amazingly fun experience, but on our second try, we've had an offer accepted, and (barring disaster) we'll be closing on June 13! (Pardon all the exclamation marks.) So what I'm trying to say is... start doing push-ups now so you can come help move heavy stuff. We'll have pizza :)

You might say the house is on the mature side. Okay, you might say the house was under construction when Utah became a state. It was built in 1897. Isn't that thrilling? Well, we think it is. The house was built in Hooper, then relocated to Roy in 1995. That must have been a sight. Anyway, Nate discovered it at utahrealestate.com and fell in love with it pretty much instantaneously (he sat at work one day and tried to map out the floor plan based on the provided photos), and Michelle just laughed at him. But he convinced her to give a chance and it's grown on her quite a bit. The inside has been completely redone (wood floors, central heating, new plumbing) and the inspection turned up only minor problems, which the sellers have agreed to fix. Here are our top 5 and bottom 3 about the house:

What we like:
1. The yard. It's on a third of an acre, with vacant land on either side.
2. The layout. After looking at the same Ivory Home floor plan about 15 times, it was refreshing to see something new. On the bottom floor is a living room, kitchen, dining room, and den. The second floor has two bedrooms, two baths, laundry room, and "craft nook," which we're thinking of using as an office and library. On the third floor is
3. The loft. With skylights. Oh yeah.
4. Tons of storage space! That's a big deal for a family with one closet to their name.
5. Flexibility. We can make the loft a bedroom or a playroom, the den into a formal dining room, the dining room into a family room...

What we're not thrilled about:
1. The busy road it's on. But we'll fence in the back yard and get used to it.
2. How far Roy is from the Church Office Building (where Nate works). But we're just a mile and a half from the new commuter rail, and Nate should get to work in under an hour. Not ideal, but at least he can do some reading.
3. The brown toilet and bath. What were the remodelers thinking?!

  1. yay! congrats!!! That's super exciting! I know how you feel about brown toilets... my dad's house has one on the main floor.. where guests go... and it's HIDEOUS! Not to mention the matching brown sink, orange tiled floor and yellow walls... yes, it was built in the 70's.. and my Dad hasn't quite left that era ;-) hehe. Sorry we won't be around to help you move :-( sad face. But if you need anything when we get back- we'd love to see you and help out in any way!
