A Little Scary

We left to come home from our long, luxurious Thanksgiving break in St. George on Sunday afternoon and didn't quite get there until Monday evening. The holiday traffic was pretty busy the whole way, and at about Santaquin, it slowed down a lot really fast. Nate slammed on the brakes and just barely managed to miss rear-ending the car in front of us, but there was a big pickup truck pulling a trailer behind us and it just couldn't stop in time, so it made a sandwich out of our poor little Civic. Luckily we're all okay, just sore and scraped and bruised, but pretty shaken up. It's really scary when your baby's in the backseat.
To make a long story short, Nate took care of business while Beck and I cried, shook a lot, and took Addison first into the backseat of a police car to stay warm and then into an ambulance so they could check us all. Shauna and Doug and Doug's brother Jake came to the rescue and took us and all our stuff back to their house in Provo where Nate, Add and I spent the night while we tried to figure out insurance, etc. They were so good to us.
Nate ended up having to take Monday (Add's birthday!) off so that we could sort everything out. Unluckily, our car is totaled. Luckily, it's not our fault. We're crossing our fingers that we'll be able to get a new car soon and that we won't have a car payment. It's been so nice having it paid off. Until then, we get to drive this beast around on AllState's dime. Oh yeah.

We were considering making the switch to a front-facing carseat while in St. George so that Addison would enjoy the ride home a little more. It's a good thing we didn't, because apparently once a carseat's been in an accident you're supposed to get rid of it. But we got a new one for him on the way out of Provo. He digs it. Big time. On his maiden voyage in it, he kept smiling and kicking his feet and pointing out the window. It was so cute.

So despite the crumminess of totalling our car and being stiffnecked (and shouldered and backed), we feel really lucky that it wasn't as bad as it could've been. And although we love our old Civic, we're getting excited to have a car with a working cd player and power locks that don't lock automatically every time you close all the doors.

  1. We were driving home from the airport about 8 Sunday night and saw all of that bad traffic down as far as we could see. The string of lights stretched across the mountains looked pretty cool but I felt really bad for everyone sitting in it. I'm glad y'all are ok! Sorry about your car. That's exciting that y'all get to get a new one though. It's a good time to buy a car! You can find some pretty good deals right now!

  3. I'm sorry about your accident. I know how terrifying it is to be in an accident and have your little one in the backseat. I'm so glad you're okay. And, wow, can you believe you've hit the front-facing car seat milestone?? That's a big one! Happy Birthday Addison! Wish we could have caught up with you while we were in Utah, but alas... maybe around Christmas. Got any Georgia plans?
