It's Out!

A couple weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of accompanying my hubby to a swank reception at the top of the Church Office Building to celebrating the printing and distributing of the first volume of the Joseph Smith Papers.

In what turned out to be a stroke of luck, I managed to leave my i.d. in the car. As Nate and I were rushing to the parking lot to get it, we crossed paths with Elder Holland who said in a booming voice, "Hi, how are you two cute kids doing tonight?" Wow. When a prophet calls you cute, it must be true.

We made it on time and enjoyed hearing remarks from several people who have been involved in the researching, editing, printing, distribution, funding, and administration of the project. And then came the moment we'd all been waiting for - we got our copy!

I've enjoyed being in the loop and hearing from Nate about all the work that's gone into putting the book together. He's been working there just over a year, and knowing the hours and work he alone has put in makes it mind-boggling for me to think that several people have been painstakingly working on this first volume for at the very least ten years. And their attention to detail wasn't in vain, lemme tell you. What a book! It is beautiful! The cover looks like something that belongs on the shelf of a distinguished attorney or congressman. The jacket design is also gorgeous, not to mention the paper. It's a really nice color. Nate did a lot of work with the photographs, and they look great. There are several pictures of pages of text from the original journals, and you can read them right off the page. I don't know a ton about books, but Nate's taught me a thing or two, and it is high quality. Oh yeah, and the content is pretty cool too. My favorite page is one of the very first ones. Any guesses why?

After gawking at the book for awhile and getting it signed by the bigwigs, we made our way over to the food table where we found ourselves behind none other than Elder Nelson and his wife. It was pretty awkward as we tried to be extra dainty and not spill anything on them, so Nate decided to break the ice. As Sister Nelson placed veggies on her husband's plate, Nate looked up at him and said something to the effect of, "So she makes you eat healthy too, huh?" She graciously made some comment about how he's always healthy while Nate blushed with the realization of what he was doing. Luckily the table wasn't very long and we made it to the end soon thereafter.

Yesterday was the second "official" day that the book was in stores, and word on the street is that the first 12,000 copies are sold out. That is a big deal. Similar projects (like the papers of the founding fathers, for example) are doing good to sell a thousand. But don't despair if you haven't gotten yours. I think they'll be doing a second printing at the end of January. Hint: Amazon has it for the cheapest.
