Feelin' the Burn

After several weeks of training, I'm proud to announce that Nate and I ran a 5K today! We got motivated to get some exercise a month or so ago, and have been running three times a week since. The kiddies have a great time riding in the stroller, which Nate gallantly pushes most of the time. That explains his totally ripped thighs. He ran cross country in high school, and has been a very patient and kind coach to his slow, sweaty wifey.

Some friends watched Add and Bryn this morning while we ran the race. We had a great time. The weather was gorgeous, and we ran the whole thing without walking, which was my goal. Nate stayed with me the whole time and spent the last third of the race telling me all about the book he just read on Frederick Douglass to distract me from the discomfort of trying to haul myself up an enormous hill. The distraction worked, and we finished in 34 minutes and 6 seconds. Not too shabby for a first-timer if you ask me.

I'm proud of us for seeing the 5K goal through. It's a good feeling to invest a little time in your health. And I like hearing Addison ask, "munning?" (translation: running) when I tell him we're going bye-bye. It makes me feel like we're active and we're teaching him how to enjoy getting outside and moving around. We're trying to think of ways to stay motivated to keep going now that it's done and the very long and very cold winter months are approaching. Running is nice because it's pretty convenient and pretty free. Any ideas?

  1. I'm impressed! Good job!

Don't ask me for tips about how to stay active--that is definitely NOT my expertise ;)

  2. Way to go! Running can definitely be a sacrifice at times, but doesn't finishing a race make it all worth it? It's a great feeling. I'm not quite sure what to recommend for staying in shape during the winter. In the past I've run through the winter, but not while I was prego and not now that I've got a little kido to keep warm. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do either. Bring on stair repeats in the house and Tybo, I guess ;o)

  3. I've been a blogger slacker- so apologies for the late congrats!! That's awesome that you did a 5k! Winters are hard- and I don't have kids- so no mommy advice from me... but running for a reason or signing yourself up for a race esp. if you paid for it keeps me motivated. Heh... i just signed up for the SLC marathon for April.. that means winter training. I'll let you know if I learn anything ;-) Again- congrats on the 5k- way to go!

  4. Way to go! I hate running, like really really hate it, so I swim. Curtis get's in to USU's pool free, so I don't know what your options are there. I am definitely not an exerciser, at all, so I envy you and your determination!
