Slow It Down, Nellie!

Other than moments of cuteness here and there, I have never before wanted to stop the clock on my kids growing up. The time until the next milestone generally seems endless. But I'm calling it on Addison right now. He is very convinced of his big boy status and is offended if anyone says otherwise. Several things have happened of late that really have made me feel like he's growing up way too fast.

#1 Haircut:
Addison has desperately needed a haircut for several weeks now. I finally bit the bullet this weekend and got the clippers out. Things were insane at the time as I tried to wrestle Bryn into the tub and get Addison to hold still and stop touching everything in sight. Long story short, I used the one I meant for the sides on the top. Result: big boy ready for summer.

#2 Naptime:
Addison very rarely naps these days. But he does have an hour of quiet time every day where he plays by himself in his room and gives Mommy a breather. He likes to be carried to his room for quiet time and bedtime. And until I opened my mouth about a week ago he always requested to be carried baby-style in my arms. I mentioned something about carrying my "baby Addison" and now he is very clear each time in his request to be carried straight up and down like a big boy. He demonstrates each time with his finger.

#3 Thumb:
He's been a thumb-sucker since he was about 6 months old. He LOVES sucking his thumb and "rolling" to go to sleep. Or during books or tv time, or in the car, or when he's scared or nervous or feeling shy. AKA getting a little out of hand. So we used that nasty nail polish stuff that tastes gross and painted his thumb a couple times a day. It was pretty heart-wrenching to watch, but it didn't take long. He just needed Mommy or Daddy and the promise that he could get a Darth Vader toy from Walmart in a few days and he was able to sleep. He was thrilled when Darth Vader day finally came (p.s. He only knows about Darth Vader from the kid down the street and a toy at the gym - he's never actually seen Star Wars, thanks.). We went up and down the toy aisle and he finally decided on the blue Iron Man instead. (Same kid down the street.)

Addison would be thrilled if he could read this post and see that I am conceding and admitting that he's getting big. As for me, I want my baby back.

  1. I know the feeling. And let me tell you, pretty soon he will be saying stuff like, "This pinwheel involves wind and I just watched a documentary on wind power," and you will think to yourself, 'what the heck? aren't you like 18 months old still?' Trust me. That's the experience I just had on Easter Sunday with my toddl- I mean, my 7 year-old.

  2. That last picture is so funny. It totally looks like he is saying I totally got this mom. It is really hard to see them grow up. I think I will be really sad when Liam gives up naps. Oh man we are really grown ups now huh?

  3. Hahaha, I love that last picture! He's like, "I gave up my thumb for the blue Iron Man." :) What a sweet big boy!
