Our Garden

We have become avid gardeners around here. That does not mean that we're experts by any means, or even good at it, but we do enjoy spending quiet evenings out there weeding and hunting for squash bugs. The kids insisted that they each needed their own gloves, and they (Addison especially) really like to go out and weed with us and dump buckets of water in random places.

We've been at it since late January when we started our seeds inside, and we planted outside right around Mother's Day. We replanted several things that died within days of the transfer, and I am proud to say that this is our biggest and most promising garden to date. We'll see how it all turns out with weather, etc. One of the very best things we've done is to take my parents' advice to set up a drip irrigation system. It is so nice not to spend an hour and a half standing out watering each individual plant every other day and instead to just run out and turn on the hose and let it run for an hour and a half or so.

Here's the list of what we're growing:
4 zucchini
4 roma tomatoes
2 grape tomatoes
5 cantaloupe
5 peppers
carrots
2 butternut squash
onions and garlic (those didn't work so well)
corn
1 spaghetti squash
red potatoes
2 cucumbers
4 brandywine tomatoes
5 crookneck squash

So far we've gotten to eat 2 cucumbers and a crookneck squash and they have been SO good! And the kids love the cucumbers, which is nothing short of a miracle.

And here are some glamour shots. If you think it's weedy you should've seen it a week ago when we got back from vacation.

  2. Beautiful! I'm a little jealous! This year our garden consists of a variety of tomatoes (about 7 different plants), 3 watermelon plants, a few bell peppers, and a cucumber. I think the only thing we're going to get are tomatoes. Everything else is struggling just to survive. I guess we did just move in last fall and with the state of the yard when we got it, we're doing well to be harvesting more than weeds.

  4. Your garden is beautiful! Good work! We decided we needed one too, since that is one of the only way I can get my kids to voluntarily eat veggies (they have to grow them themselves!)
