A Big Day for Addison

Check out this cute kid! He broke his arm last night!

It had been a particularly chaotic evening. We had four people over helping to hang the sheetrock in our kitchen, dinnertime had come and gone (at 7:00) while Nate and the guys were in there working. The kids were tired and in desperate need of baths. We were all sweating our faces off because the doors had been open all day to cut down on dust inhalation. The house looked like an explosion or two had gone off, you know, that sort of a day. My friend Melissa had come over earlier to bring some tools to her hubby, and seeing the amazing state of things (and, I'm sure, of me), she stopped by again later with some toys and cookies for the kids. Seriously, I've said it before and I'll say it again, we have the best ward and friends on the planet.

We were outside and the kids were playing on the swingset. I was in the process of thanking her profusely and reassuring her (okay, mainly myself) that we'd be just fine. And then there was a bloodcurdling scream from underneath the airplane swing, where Addison had just landed. So loud that Nate came running from inside the house. Addison kept screaming that his arm was broken and he was pretty hysterical. I did a quick exam and there was not anything jutting out and it looked pretty okay, but he cried and cried and ended up with a bloody nose from all the crying. Finally, fighting back tears myself, I packed the kids inside without making eye contact with anyone and headed to the bathtub to try and calm things down so I could get a good read on Addison.

But the bathroom, like everything else in the world, is under construction, so I stripped him down and tossed him in mom and dad's shower after yelling for Nate to come and turn the water heater back on. Once we got the temp worked out it did a lot to calm him down. We did a quick but thorough scrub, jammified and took tylenol, and decided to head to the instacare just to be sure. But Nate checked online, and the instacare had closed seven minutes earlier. Really nice.

Bless Nate's heart, he was officially on everything-but-Addison duty, which was a lot. Add and I headed up to his bedroom, read a story and scriptures, said a prayer, and positioned his arm just right on his ladybug pillow and decided we'd go to the doctor in the morning.

This morning Addison woke with another bloodcurdler, and we confirmed that we'd go to the doc, despite the lack of visible injuries. Nate is the best, and pushed around his meeting schedule at work so he could be working from home today. So Addison and I went to the doctor, just the two of us, and it was nice just to be able to sit in a chair with him in my lap. It's been awhile. He brought his stuffed dog with him for moral support, and was very brave and quiet through the exam and x-rays. The doctor came in and let me see the x rays and it was definitely broken, so we scooted over to another room and Addison picked a red cast, which will be his loyal companion for six weeks.

He's in great spirits and does not want any one to write on it. Incidentally, Aunt Lindsey and Grandma both have broken left wrists right now too! What are the odds? Anyway, Nate and I feel like we've arrived. We have a cute little tan boy with skinned up knees running around with a cast on his arm. He'll have bragging rights forever. Life is good.
