Kays Creek North Fork Trail

The first thing you need to know is that we made up the name of the trail. No clue what it really is.

The second thing you need to know is that just as we were starting out, we got rattled at! By a real bona fide rattlesnake that we'd startled! I've seen several rattlesnakes, but never have I been rattled at. It was cool. And I was grateful that the snake had the courtesy to give us some warning and slither away. That experience came in handy when we were on the way back down the trail and a certain oldest son of ours had trouble staying with the group. When he got too far ahead I'd just nonchalantly holler up at him to keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. So devious. So effective.

We want to go back sometime just to play in the creek.

Roly pollies abounded.

These flowers are so cool! An evolutionary marvel!

Oh my goodness I could gobble this boy up.

The hike was gorgeous and mostly shady. It was a stretch for our little family - we hiked a total of 2.1 miles with 515 feet elevation gain! And every last one of us walked the whole way, except for little man, who probably would've preferred walking it to sometimes being in the pack. Leah especially was a major trooper. Her legs are quite a bit shorter than everyone else's. Addison and Nate had hiked it a few days before on a date, so they knew just the spot for a picnic lunch. A nice shady area with a view that the kids dubbed, "Sandwiches."

The final climb. Major kudos to Leah, and thanks to whoever wrote the song, "The Ants Go Marching One By One." It gave her the umph she needed to power up the hill.

Made it!
